Why do you care what is in your skincare products if they work?

This is a good question and I love to answer it when asked by my clients.

Here are the straight facts. Our skin is our largest organ of our body and the largest detox organ next to our liver, kidneys and colon. Our skin absorbs around 70% of our skincare products and the average person uses around 168 ingredients each day.

When they say average, the statistics are talking about someone who doesn’t do a whole lot. You know, shower using soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, body moisturizer and deodorant and maybe some fragrance and sunscreen. For those of us who wear make-up and lots of lotions and potions, we use TONS more! Also, keep in mind, our newest technologies in skincare and personal care products are continually touting the benefits of nano-particles, liposomal technology and chemical drivers that force ingredients into the dermis where our blood is easily accessible and carries the ingredients throughout the whole body, not just the face. This could be a bad by-product of a good intention.

All this being said, I understand wanting to age gracefully and agree wholeheartedly, but I don’t want to be the human test tube for chemical and beauty manufacturers. It is crazy, but the chemical companies put out approximately 700 new chemicals each year and they don’t do much testing before they put them in our skincare and make-up products. (isn’t that crazy??) Many times they wait till a lot of people get adverse reactions or worse, sick and then they say, “oops, maybe we should stop making it or putting it in our personal care products”. Kind of backwards, right? Chemical companies have a lot of power, money and influence in Washington, D.C. and around the world.

The EU (European Union) has approximately 1300 ingredients banned from personal care products. Guess how many the United States has?...This is really crazy, we only have approximately 13. The ironic thing is the EU is no angel, but they sure do have a better grip on this issue than the U.S.

This is one of the main reasons I wanted to make my own line and give some transparency to my industry. There are so many lines that say they are “natural” or “organic” and they are not at all, not even a little bit. They even say they don’t have certain ingredients, but they are clearly right on the label (ingredient deck). The beauty industry is highly unregulated and there are not enough watchdogs. This is one of the reasons I started working with MADE SAFE. They helped me to see that many ingredients claiming to be safe have sub-ingredients not listed on the ingredient deck and are harmful to human health and our ecosystem. We wouldn’t know this information from the labels because these are hidden from the end user. More on this later….

No shaming you on what you choose to use. I just want you to know the facts and then you get to choose the right thing for you. Simple.

So, the products you use do matter. They matter to your health and beauty long term. They also matter to our ecosystem. These products and their chemicals run off into our waterways, and effect all of us, our ecosystem and wildlife…something to ponder.
